About This Course
This course takes a deeper look at ʻAe Kai to Kahiki—an ʻōiwi approach to research rooted in Hawaiian ways of knowing—as a tool to help teachers apply the ʻŌiwi Edge Innovation Process in their classrooms. Grounded in the teachings of David Malo re-contextualized in contemporary scholarship, this approach empowers kumu and haumāna to look critically at their own positionalities and analyze research sources for potential bias. Through a podcast, videos, slide-decks and activities you will learn to utilize the ʻAe Kai to Kahiki approach to support haumāna in conducting kanaka-centered research. By the end of the course, you will be able to: - Foster your students’ critical thinking and include diverse narratives in their research - Recognize and address bias when guiding student research - Evaluate sources ethically and responsibly alongside your learners - Incorporate the ʻAe Kai to Kahiki approach to enrich your students’ research processes Ultimately, you will be equipped to apply this ʻōiwi approach within the Kilo phase of the ʻŌiwi Edge Innovation Process, ensuring that your haumāna benefit from culturally grounded, ethically informed research practices that honor diverse voices and futures. Prerequisites: Must complete Pathway 1 prior to taking this course. This ensures that all participants have a foundational understanding necessary to fully engage with and benefit from the advanced strategies and practices covered in this course.
